President's Report
by Joe Geldens, FCPOA President

As the newly elected president of the FCPOA, I would like to express my appreciation, the appreciation of the board of directors, and members of the community to Todd Vitz for his dedicated service to our community.  I would also like to thank Larry Middleton for his time and efforts as President of the FCPOA during the past year.  Both have spent numerous hours volunteering to make Forest Cove a great place to live and raise our families.  I would also like to once again welcome Marian Burrows and Keith Arnold back to the board of directors along with newcomer Debra Vaughn. Please take a moment to express your appreciation to these volunteers the next time you see them.
As reported in the May edition of the Beacon, several projects were completed over the past year. Larry Middleton reported at the annual meeting that we are working with the City of Houston on the drainage issues that we have identified. We have been promised three (3) new culverts for Sycamore Lane at Buttercup, Magnolia Lane at Buttercup and Forest Cove Drive at Mistletoe Lane. The current board of directors will work diligently to see these projects through to resolution.
Please keep your board of directors in mind when you have suggestions for changes and improvements to our community. This group will work hard to address the problems faced by our ever-changing community to make it an even better place for all residents. Please consider attending a monthly meeting to learn more about the issues being addressed and show your support for those who volunteer their time to manage the business of our community.

Crime Watch
by Bill Reavis, Crime Watch Chair

The Kingwood Division of HPD reported a total of 156 incidents of crime for the month of April 2007, of these 6 were in Forest Cove.  We had a burglary on Fairway Farms, thefts on Masters Way and Forest Cove Drive and a burglary of a motor vehicle on Mustang Trail and 2 on Hamblen Rd.
HPD has started a campaign to reduce thefts and burglaries by passing out cards reminding citizens that many of these crimes could be eliminated by locking their doors and keeping valuables out of sight.
Forest Cove has experienced, for our area, a major crime wave.  Beginning in late April, several gasoline thefts occurred on Mustang Trail, a house was broken into on Chimney Vine (TV, computers, personal items and automobile stolen).  Most recently in the early morning hours of May 13, several automobiles were broken into and attempts were made to enter one or more homes on Palomino.  Most of the property taken in these incidents was recovered from a residence in the immediate area. Two local residents were arrested by HPD and jailed in connection with these crimes. They are back out of jail on bond. HPD is continuing their investigation and other charges may be filed and other arrests made.
We all need to be alert, watching for suspicious activity around our property and that of our neighbors, reporting any suspicious activity along with descriptions and vehicle license numbers if possible to HPD Central Dispatch at 713-884-3131 and any Crime in Progress to 911.
Once again, there is that echooooo! If you don’t lock it you are going to lose it.

This will be my last report as Crime Watch chairman.  Newly elected board member Debbie Vaughn will be taking over this assignment.

Crime Watch
by Debra Vaughn, In-coming Crime Watch Chair

Due to the increase in problems in our neighborhood, I would like to see about crimewatchgetting the Block Captain/Crime Watch program rebuilt.   I know that this has been a part of Forest Cove for many years and of course while everything was easy and safe we all sort of let the organization slide.   Maybe now is the time to start back up.   I would like to offer to help get this going but do need to see if there is an interest.   The system previously consisted of people who volunteered to be block captains.  These people helped make sure people knew who to talk to about when they were leaving their homes on vacation or extended trips.  They knew who lived where and had an idea of who was supposed to be in the area.   They also helped make sure the people on their block knew what was happening and what to be alert for.   This was a way to keep us all informed.   I would like to recruit volunteers and then organize a meeting with the police to train those people.   This is just a way for all of us to be better neighbors.  Please email me at vau511@embarqmail.com or call at 281-359-5821 to show your interest and willingness to volunteer your time.

Identity TheftAvoidIDTheft
By Tina Geldens, Editor

Defend
This month the last installment will deal with defending yourself against ID Theft as soon as you suspect it.

  • Place a “Fraud Alert” on your credit reports, and review the reports carefully.  The alert tells creditors to follow certain procedures before they open new accounts in your name or make changes to your existing accounts.  The three nationwide consumer reporting companies have toll-free numbers for placing an initial 90-day fraud alerts; a call to one company is sufficient:
      • Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
      • Experian: 1-888-EXPERIAN (397-3742)
      • TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289

Placing a fraud alert entitles you to free copies of your credit reports.  Look for inquiries from companies you haven’t contacted, accounts you didn’t open, and debts on your accounts that you can’t explain.

  • Close Accounts.  Close any accounts that have been tampered with or established fraudulently.
    • Call the security or fraud departments of each company where an account was opened or changed without your okay.  Follow up in writing, with copies of supporting documents.
    • Use the ID Theft Affidavit at ftc.gov/idtheft to support your written statement.
    • Ask for verification that the disputed account has been closed and the fraudulent debts discharged.
    • Keep copies of documents and records of your conversations about the theft
  • File a police report.  File a report with law enforcement officials to help you with creditors who may want proof of the crime.
  • Report the theft to the Federal Trade Commission.  Your report helps law enforcement officials across the country in their investigations.
    • Online: ftc.gov/idtheft.
    • By phone:  1-877-ID-THEFT (438-4338) or TTY, 1-866-653-4261.
    • By mail: Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, DC  20580
