President's Report
by Joe Geldens, FCPOA President

As I write this article, plans are being finalized for the Fourth of July Parade and BBQ. Thanks to Marian Burrows and numerous volunteers who have worked very hard to see that this event is successful and is enjoyed by all who attend.
Sgt Gary Spurger, a member of the Harris County Precinct 4 High Tech Crimes Unit, spoke at the Positive Interaction Program meeting June 17. PIP is a monthly meeting that provides a forum for residents to connect with local police officers. Spurger talked about computer security and how it can help eliminate identity theft. His insight was very educational. The Positive Interaction Program meets the third Tuesday of the month at Kingwood Church of Christ, 2901 Woodland Hills Drive, at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. Every month they have very interesting topics for discussion.
Thanks to Keith Arnold for his hard work in getting a new light fixture installed in the chair room as well as fixing some electrical problems in the building.  He also fixed a sign at the baseball gate that was vandalized and cut up a tree that had fallen in a wind storm.
Bill Reavis the Crime Watch Chairperson is handing this assignment over to newly elected Board Member Debra Vaughn. Thank you Bill for writing excellent articles on crime reports to keep the community informed.
Please keep your Board of Directors in mind when you have suggestions for changes and improvements to our community. This group will work hard to address the problems faced by our community to make it an even better place for all residents. Please consider attending a monthly meeting to learn more about the issues being addressed and show your support for those who volunteer their time to manage the business of our community.

Crime Watch
by Debra Vaughn, Crime Watch Chair

Dear Neighbors,   The response to the neighborhood watch program has been awesome.   I will arrange a training or information meeting with a Houston Police Department representative as soon as possible.   Please keep an eye on the Beacon for that announcement.   We are still in need of many more volunteers for this program to work as well as it did in the past.   Please email me or call if you are interested in having your name on the list.
As far as the local information, most of our crime is crime of opportunity.  Cars that are left unlocked with valuables visible are a crime waiting to happen.  Remember, lock up and put things out of sight.   Keeping garages closed and valuables such as bikes and yard equipment out of sight make our neighborhood less inviting to criminals and more aesthetic for us.   Watch for unusual activity and call the police if you have any concerns. Call any crime in progress to 911 and any suspicious activity to HPD Central Dispatch at 713-884-3131. Be a good neighbor.

Forest Cove Garden Club
By Martha Welu, Publicity Chair

Forest Cove Garden Club 2008-2009 Officers Installed

The new Forest Cove Garden Club Officers were installed on Thursday, May 8th, at The Veranda Restaurant.  New officers are Barbara Schmid, President, Gay Simmons,1st Vice President, Clarice May, 2nd Vice President, Eva Gobbie, Recording Secretary, Sally Johnson, Corresponding Secretary,  and Joan Smith, Treasurer.

Out going President Jan Haase led the club through a very successful year, including two very successful fund raisers, raising more money than in any previous year.  Even more important was her gift of making every member feel that they were very important and very appreciated.  She was a wonderful role model.  Members worked very hard but loved the wonderful times and friendships that they developed this year.
The Club, in recognition of all of our servicemen, has adopted 1st Battalion 66th Armor, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division Army Unit.  In addition to providing money for a Thanksgiving party prior to being deployed and 1,000 phone cards, the Garden Club made boxes and personally sent letters, cards and e-mails to soldiers in their adopted unit.
They assisted the Forest Cove Community Center with much needed new tables and other items.  They also gave generous scholarships to deserving college students and donated and assisted in many other important causes.

Ruth Flake
By Tina Geldens, Editor

Forest Cove lost a dear friend on July 1, 2008.  To those who never had the opportunity to meet Ruth, she was a “Special Lady”.  At her funeral, a friend described her like this: “To know her was to love her. This is what I saw in Ruth Flake that made me love her and respect her:  her faith, her church, her family and friends.  She loved her church friends and she enjoyed her ‘mermaid friends’.  She also enjoyed working at the elections.  She voted in every election and always encouraged others to vote.  She was FCPOA Building Manager for 15 years.  She was all about family, life, and doing for others.”
In 2004, Ruth was the Grand Marshal of the Forest Cove 4th of July celebration.  Ruth will be missed by all who knew her.  Our sympathies go out to her children Thomas, Laura, and David and their families, sisters Jane and Carol, brother Tom, and to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mosquito Tips

With the recent rains and the warm air, mosquitoes will be out in force!  There are a number of things residents can do to protect themselves from being bitten and possibly infected with West Nile Virus.

  1.  Don’t feed the storm drains.  Sweep up lawn clippings, leaves and tree limbs from sidewalks, driveways, and ditches.
  2. Remove/empty any containers which may hold water.  Flowerpots, tires, children’s toys, etc. should be drained, inverted, covered or removed.  Change water in birdbaths at least once a week.
  3. Keep rain gutters properly clean and draining and repair household leaks.
  4. Make sure screens on windows and doors are in good condition.
  5.  Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors particularly at dawn and dusk.

Forest Cove has contracted for weekly spraying of all of Forest Cove through October of this year.  You may have noticed that they spray late on Saturday evenings.
If a dead bird is found in the yard and it does not have ants or maggots on it, please put it in a plastic bag and take it to a drop-off site where it can be tested for West Nile Virus.  The closest site to Kingwood is the Humble Maintenance Facility at 2302 Atascocita Road.  This location is open Monday through Friday 8 am to 4 pm.  For more information, please call Harris County Mosquito Control at 713-440-3036 or visit their website at http://www.harriscountyhealth.com/hcmosquitoctrl/default.htm
